The hydrology of this Ramsar designated site creates surreal root structures. Exposed during the rainy season to extraordinary hydrodynamic flow through and around these islands in the middle of the Mekong river. Beautiful forms rise from the receding waters and disappear again as the tide of seasons continues over the annual cycle.

If you wanted to teach hydrology and fluid dynamics this area is a great area to do it. With many hundreds of river island in the main flow of the Mekong river it would be easy to illustrate to students how these forms are created.

Home to the last northerly pods of Irrawaddy dolphins this biodiversity hotspot is potentially threatened from the construction of the Don Sahong dam a few kilometers upstream from here.
