  • Religion: Hindu
  • Patron: Rajendravarman

Significance

Often called the "Jewel of Khmer Art," this temple has some of the most exquisite carvings at Angkor.

History

Unlike most temples at Angkor, Banteay Srei was not built by a king, but by an advisor to Jayavarman V. It was discovered by the French in 1914, and largely restored between 1931 and 1936.

Description

Banteay Srei is enclosed by three walls and a moat. It is approached from the east via a causeway. The three inner sanctuaries are on a raised terrace, flanked by libraries and surrounded by galleries. The temple is built of pink sandstone, an uncommon material for Khmer temples.
