Baksei Chamkrong | "The bird that shelters under its wing"

Purpose

The temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, but may also have been a funerary temple.

Significance

Prehistoric remains were found around the base of this temple by archaeologist Bernard-Philippe Groslier and later by Charles Higham. These remains showed evidence of industrial activity.

History

The temple was probably begun by Hashavarman I, though was finished and consecrated by King Rajendravarman in 947.

Description

Baksei Chamkrong is a four-levelled pyramid of brick and laterite which culminates in a single tower. It was originally surrounded by a brick enclosure wall, only fragments of which remain.
